In another nod from the global design community, Michael Neumayr Design (MND) was nominated for the 2010 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany for distinction in the field of design. This award and nomination process is unique in that one cannot submit an entry. Rather, only past recipients of national and international design awards may be nominated by ministers and senators of Germany’s Federal States, hence it’s nickname:“The Prize of Prizes.”
The nomination recognized Michael Neumayr’s Stresemann Co05 Barstool, which he designed for Atelier Schneeweiss of Germany. Neumayr’s 23-item Stresemann collection, and indeed the Co05 Barstool, is defined by its unique construction and design method. All joints are connected using a push fit design that renders structural screw joints or welding obsolete. Neumayr’s ecologically minded production method significantly reduces the amount of energy needed for production and allows segregation of materials. And while the engineering and design principals are environmentally friendly and technologically innovative, it’s the unique, sleek modern look that has been turning heads in the design world since ORGATEC in 2008. Sure to become staple of classic modern furniture design, the Stresemann collection includes the high lounge chair and foot-stool, the light lounge, rocking and swing lounge chairs as well as the conference chair, cantilevered and sled base chairs and the first of its kind cantilevered airport bench. The clean, modern lines and innovative design of this collection and of the Co05 Barstool have established this talented product designer among the world’s newest designers to follow.
“Growing up in Munich with aspirations to be a product designer, I have followed this annual award since I was a teen. To receive a nomination is something I dreamed of as a recent Art Center grad and now it feels humbling to be considered for this great honor,” commented Neumayr via con call interview from his studios in Los Angeles’ Silverlake district. When asked what made this nomination most rewarding Neumayr had the following to say: “More than anything, I am really proud this nomination recognized my emphasis on sustainable production and decommissioning. The pursuit of environmentally responsible product and environmental design is core to my philosophy and approach. It’s important that more designers are being recognized for this essential aspect of the design process – and I am very pleased to be among them.”
This nomination is the latest in a string of accolades for Neumayr’s innovative, 23-item Stresemann Collection, including the Chicago Athenaeum’s Good Design award, the as well as two IDEA finalists and the “Gute Gestaltung” award by the DDC. The Hiller Group’s commissioning of this collection represented one of Europe’s largest commercial contracts for 2008. While furniture and product design remains core to MND’s portfolio, the studio is currently underway with a series of exciting new interior design projects in L.A., Munich, Brasil, Cambodia and Morocco. Look for news of these exciting projects in the year ahead.
About the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2010
Known as the Prize of Prizes, The Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany does not involve the traditional nominations process. In fact, one cannot apply for this prestigious design award. Instead, designers are nominated by the Ministries and Senators for Trade & Industry of the German States or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The Award’s one important precondition is that a product must have already been awarded a national or international prize. Another precondition for entry is that companies must have been nominated by the Ministries and Senators of the Federal States or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. No other Design Award sets its entrants such a strict criterion. To learn more, please visit: http://www.designpreis.de/?L=3
